Mushroom rocks form when a more resistant layer of sedimentary rock sits above a softer layer. The wind erodes the lower section of the rock more than the upper section, resulting in a narrow base and a wide upper part. Rock mushrooms abound in the Ennedi region of North Eastern Chad where the sands of the Saharan desert sculpt and shape them into intriguing shapes.
