IC 1396, or the Elephant Trunk Nebula is a large circular region of glowing gas and dust in the constellation of Cepheus and is located about 2400 light-years from Earth. It is not clear to me why the nebula is nicknamed The Elephant Trunk Nebula and I suspect it may be because of the elephant trunk shaped feature just to the left of center. I assume in longer focal lengths it wud resolve more into a shape of an elephants’ trunk. Imaging was done on my Takahashi FSQ 85 with a cooled color camera during the Hanle Dark Sky reserve Star Party. At 14000ft above sea level and Bortle 1 dark skies, not much integration was required to bring out the details.
